Kentuck Knob: Chalk Hill, Pennsylvania. March 22, 2003
A
few friends and I attended one of a series of lectures put on in the living room
of Frank Lloyd Wright’s I.N. Hagan house in Chalk Hill, Pennsylvania this last
weekend. The lectures were done as
fundraisers for the ongoing facilities upgrades taking place at Kentuck Knob.
A
group of about 25 of us (many of which were Kentuck Knob docents) gathered in
the living room to hear talks given by Landscape Architect Richard Liberto and
Taliesin Fellow Jerry Morosco. The
topic was Usonian Architecture and the Arts and Crafts Garden.
The
talks were quite informative and done in the form of a debate… with Mr.
Liberto showing how Wright was a part of the Arts and Crafts movement.
Mr. Morosco showed how, though the Arts and Crafts movement influenced
Wright, he clearly went beyond its premises in seeking his own, unique American
architecture. Both speakers gave
good historical background for the folks who were less familiar with the Arts
and Crafts movement and both backed their arguments with interesting anecdotes
about Wright’s relationship with his clients.
One
of the highlights of the evening… and certainly one of my personal highlights
was the opportunity to meet Mrs. Hagan, the woman who, with her husband, had
commissioned, built and lived in Kentuck Knob.
At age 94, she is as sharp as ever.
She was a wonderful addition to the evening and made really added a lot
to the discussion.
Many
thanks to the people at Kentuck Knob for sponsoring this lecture and making it
possible to spend an evening in the home.
